Are you curious about Generative AI and its applications like ChatGPT? Google is now offering a free introductory course on GenAI. Below are my key takeaways.

Understanding Generative AI

Generative AI is a groundbreaking technology capable of creating various types of content like text, images, and audio. Gen AI is a type of AI that creates new content based on what it has learned from existing content. One of the most well-known examples of GenAI is OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Bard, which can follow prompts to carry out tasks.

Unraveling the World of AI and Machine Learning

The course elucidates AI as a framework for machines to mimic human thinking and actions. Delving deeper, it highlights machine learning (ML) as a subfield of AI. ML involves training models with input data to make predictions, commonly categorized into supervised and unsupervised learning.

In supervised learning, models predict future values based on past data, while unsupervised learning involves clustering data into groups. Generative AI, a subfield of Deep Learning (DL), operates using artificial neural networks and processes labeled and unlabeled data using various methods.

Leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and Their Role

Generative AI harnesses Large Language Models, created through supervised learning, enabling the prediction of the next word in a sequence. This is not to say that LLMs are perfect! It is possible for LLMs to generate inaccurate results, which are referred to as ‘hallucinations’. This can occur due to many factors such as the following: Model not trained on enough data, model is not given enough context, model is trained on too much data or model is trained on noisy or dirty data.

Tips to generate effective prompts

A key takeaway revolves around generating effective prompts. Detailed prompts that also specify the context are more likely to generate accurate output, when using an LLM-based application such as ChatGPT. Experimentation and iteration are crucial in refining prompts.

Conclusion

Overall, I think it is a great introductory course about GenAI and its applications. A similar course is being offered by Andrew Ng, called ‘Generative AI for Everyone’, which is also equally good. Thanks for reading!
